The Black Watch is a reproduction of the early 50’s Broadcaster pickups. Arguments about which magnets and what wire were used are endless. But having been lucky enough to own, examine and repair early 50’s Tele pickups assures me that they were built using Alnico III and wound with 43 awg plain enamel wire. And so, then, are the Revel Black Watch Tele pickups. The Black Watch replicates that classic and unique sound. Though it does twang the bridge is more throaty than twangy and more mids accentuated than a “typical” Tele pickup. It is a wonderfully unique pickup that produces a wonderfully unique Tele tone that gives up a bit more bark and bight.
Black Watch – Tele
Broadcaster spec’d. Large diameter Alnico III and 43 awg plain enamel wire in the bridge and neck.
The Black Watch has a classic throaty twang with added fatness, fullness, grunt and growl than a more typical Tele pickup. The mids are slightly accentuated, the treble is clear, and it is overall a driven tone. The Alnico III lends a very unique sweetness to the tone especially when rolled back.
