The Revel #1 Strat Pickup Set began as an effort to replicate a set of supposedly ’57 Strat pickups that were in a remarkable ’83 reissue. They were touted as “the best set of Strat pickups ever heard” and Revel was asked to replicate them. That is no small ask. We took the pickups in and discovered a few curiosities. 1. They were vintage pickups. 2. They were wound with Plain Enamel wire instead of Formvar. 3. The B and E magnets were swapped, either on mistake or on purpose. 4. The bridge pickup had a really unique compression characteristic. The major limitation of such an effort in recreation is that not every pickup set can include one of the best reissue Stratocasters I have ever played. Despite this, after several builds and a year of trying, we have nailed down what I honestly consider the best vintage/lower output Strat set we have to offer.
