Formerly known as the Fat Boy, the Revel Broadband Humbucker has long been our answer to players asking for a humbucker that splits for a true single coil sound. The Broadband has two single coil pickups built using rod magnets (like a Strat or Tele pickup) Instead of pole slugs and screws with a bar magnet beneath the coils (like a typical humbucker). Each coil is unique, wound by hand, and offset so that they to split into a full single coil pickup. In the bridge the split coil is 6.2k. In the neck the split coil is 5.7k. The splits sound exactly like a great, traditional, single coil because they are exactly that. 

The sound of the Broadband humbucker is like that of a big, boastful, single coil pickup. They are clear and articulate and can easily drive an amp while retaining great string definition. They are bright but never harsh, have solid body and bass that stays clear even under gain, and have pronounced mids that are smooth and clear instead of muddy and swirly.

Compared to a typical G style humbucker they have a much more distinct punch. The design expresses a more dynamic range which is both actually and perceptually louder. Thus the name Broadband. These are best played a little lower from the strings owing to the string pull of the combined twelve magnets.

All Broadband Humbuckers come stock with 4 wire leads.

A NOTE ABOUT SOUND CLIPS:

Corporate marketing hype has made it mostly necessary to include sound clips and resistance specifications. Both have very limited meaning and are, in many ways, lies. The best player can make the lousiest guitar loaded with the cheapest pickups played through the lamest amp sound downright amazing. For that reason I feel that clips are misleading. Clips let you hear almost everything except the pickup and primarily the amp in a controlled environment that’s not readily reproducible. Please take these thoughts into consideration.

    It’s like two guitars in one! I am very excited by these pickups. The single coil truly holds up when split and at full power the humbuckers are articulate and seasoned in tonal capability.

    Jesse is wonderful to work with and has great resources to direct the fellow diy-er.

    All in all, 10/10 would recommend.

    I recently bought one of Nightjar Guitars’ creations, which was stocked with a pair of Revel Broadbands. I was instantly blown away by the clarity and definition of each note. I don’t claim to be as proficient as I’m sure the other reviewers are, but I know what sounds good. Un-split, the Broadbands are warm and growly, never muddy. When split, it’s sparkly, bell-like heaven. Getcha some!

    We’ve used these in a few recent builds and wow, we are truly blown away. The humbucking tones are fat and juicy, with lots of snarl and full output. But then, like magic, when you coil split to single coil, it’s seriously like you swapped pickups for your favorite singles…all the purity, clarity, and chime is there in spades. These are seriously GREAT pickups…get some today and your guitar will go from one-trick-pony to the ultimate bring-one-guitar-to-any-gig axe!

    I put a pair of Broadband pickups in my Fender Jaguar HH, which I’d tried a couple other pickups in but never loved. I rewired the Jag so that the Rhythm circuit split coils for each pickup. The Broadbands do exactly what Jesse built them for – the single coils actually sound good, very much like strat pickups, and they don’t lose nearly as much volume as other split coil humbuckers I’ve tried. When unsplit, the neck pickup in particular sounds amazing, kinda similar to the vintage Maxon Wide Range in my old Greco Thinline Tele. Every combo sounds good; I love some of the sounds I get with both pickups engaged, one split, one humbucker. Combine that with the strangle switch and the Broadbands made my Jaguar an incredibly versatile beast, since there are essentially 20 combinations possible, each unique and none of them unusable. The overall clarity and balance across the strings is really impressive. It didn’t take a lot of adjustments before everything sounded great. Definitely looking at getting some more Revel pickups in the future.

    I never liked anything in the neck of my Hagstrom Swede but I love the guitar. Jesse talked with me a long time and finally told me to try a Fat Boy. I did. He was right. Not only is it a stupendous pickup both full and split, it’s as dynamic a pickup as I have used. It does something special I can’t express but I am hearing sounds from my guitar I didn’t know were in there. Thank you, Revel!

    I needed a neck pickup that fit 2 criteria: 1. No mud. 2. It had to sound like a Strat pickup when split. Jesse recommended this. I’m so glad he did. These are so good I bought the bridge soon after and now I only bring the LP to gigs.
